Christmas Quilt Patterns

The Holiday Harvest quilt is made from two quilt blocks, a 10" Grape Basket combined with an Oak Leaf and Acorn of the same size, all placed on point and surrounded by setting squares. I've included two choices for the applique block's center -- one a bit less fussy than the other.

The block is named for the Christmas season, but truly, this quilt works for any time of year -- just alter its fabrics for a completely different look. But it is a good choice whenever you need to make a quick quilty gift.

Here's a 10-inch square Christmas Tree quilt block that you can use for a holiday sampler or to create an entire forest of trees in any theme. Dress the tree up with a bit of hand or machine applique if you like. Just cut out small holiday prints and appliqué or fuse them in place -- try little stockings on the tree branches, and teddy bears and presents near its base.

And forget the bugs, because the short, squatty jars illustrated here are perfect for filling with holiday cookies and candy. The pattern includes instructions for 6" and 12" quilt blocks. Use one size in your quilt or mix them up.

The truth is, just about any quilt you want to make can be turned into a Christmas quilt just by choosing holiday fabrics. And don't stick with traditional reds and greens -- try blues and golds for something a bit different (that combination and others are used quite often in vintage holiday postcards). Star quilts, like Eight Hands Around illustrated here, make wonderful holiday projects.
