Free Quilt Block Pattern - Wyoming Valley Quilt Block
Wyoming Valley is a traditional patchwork quilt block. It's packed with patches, but isn't difficult to assemble. Do take care to sew an accurate quarter-inch seam and to press carefully to avoid stretching units during and after assembly. The Wyoming Valley block example is quite orderly, but the design can be used to make a wonderful scrap quilt, either by mixing up fabrics within each block or from block-to-block in the quilt.
Finished block size: 12" x 12"
Fabrics and Cutting
Two different red prints are used, one slightly lighter in color value to provide a little contrast where the two fabrics meet. Other fabrics are a warm yellow/gold print a dark black/gold print and a lightish green that serves as a somewhat neutral background.Deeper red print: (as shown in outermost star tips and other areas)
- (8) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
"Lighter" red print: (as shown nearest block center and in other areas)
- (3) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
Black print:
- (8) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
Yellow/gold print:
- (5) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
Lightish green:
- (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares
- (6) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
OPTIONAL Method: One "cluster" of units in the Wyoming Valley block looks like a pair of stacked Flying Geese units, and it's easy to foundation (paper) piece. Download the PDF file if you'd like to try that method. Cutting variations are below, and are generous cuts to allow for easy placement of patches.
Cutting for Foundation Pieced Method:
gold: replace four of the 2-7/8" squares with four 3-1/8" squares
black: replace four of the 2-7/8" squares with four 3-1/8" squares; also cut four 2-5/8" x 4-5/8" rectangles
green: replace four of the 2-7/8" squares with four 2-5/8" x 4-5/8" rectangles
See page 3 for paper piecing instructions.
