Make Half-Square Triangle Units
- Pair a 3-7/8" white square with a blue square of the same size. Set aside.
- Pair a 3-7/8" white square with a green square of the same size. Set aside.
- Pair three 3-7/8" green squares with blue squares of the same size. Set aside.
- Use my sandwiched half-square triangle method to make ten units: (6) green/blue; (2) white/green; (2) white/blue. Each completed unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" square.
Arrange Components Into Four Horizontal Rows
Refer to the illustration above to assemble the Tea Leaf quilt block.
- The top horizontal row is made up of two 3-1/2" blue squares and two white/blue half-square triangle units. Arrange the components as shown.
- The second row is made up of two green/blue half-square triangle units and the white 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle. Arrange the components as shown.
- The third row is made up of two 3-1/2" green squares and two white/green half-square triangle units. Arrange the components as shown.
- The bottom row is made up of four green/blue half-square triangle units. Arrange the components as shown.
- Sew the components of each row together.
- In rows with plain squares and the rectangle, press seam allowances towards those plain units. Where possible, press other seam allowances in opposite directions as those in the adjoining rows.
- Matching seam intersections carefully, sew the rows together and press. The block should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".
- If the block is a bit small or isn't quite square, press again and remeasure. Use my easy squaring-up method if necessary.
