Snowball Quilt Blocks with Churn Dash Variation

The corner triangles of the Churn Dash variation are smaller than normal to flow with the narrower frames that surround the block's center square. Make the corners of the Snowball smaller too, so that they link with the Churn Dash to create a secondary design where corners meet.

The patchwork divisions at the Churn Dash block's corners take up one-sixth of the length along each block side. We'll make our Snowball tips the same length so that they interact with the Churn Dash patchwork.

Finished Dimensions

  • one-sixth = 2" for a twelve-inch finished block
  • one-sixth = 1" for a six-inch finished block.

Make a Snowball Block

  1. Cut a 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" square or a 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" square to match the unfinished size of your Churn Dash quilt block

  2. Add 1/2" to desired Snowball tip dimensions to accommodate seam allowances. Cut four squares equal to the result:

    • cut 2-1/2" squares for the 12-inch block
    • cut 1-1/2" squares for the 6-inch block.

  3. Use the quick Snowball corners method to sew a square to each corner the plain square. Press and your Snowball is complete.
