Assemble two Practical Orchard quilt blocks.

Assemble the Practical Orchard Quilt Block

  1. Pair the two 4-1/4" squares and use my easy sandwich method to create two half-square triangles from the pair. Each resulting unit should measure 3-7/8" x 3-7/8".

  2. Place the two half square triangle units from Step 1 right sides together, contrasting colors facing each other. Sew them on the diagonal just as you did in Step 1, but with the seams going across the existing seams. Cut apart and press open to create two quarter square triangle units that measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" each (more instructions).

  3. Gather four 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" medium-dark brown and four novelty squares of the same size.

  4. Arrange the squares and one of your quarter square triangle units into three rows as shown.

  5. Sew components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the novelty fabrics.

  6. Join rows together, matching seam intersections carefully. Press.

  7. The Practical Orchard quilt block should measure 9-1/2" x 9-1/2".

  8. Use remaining patches to assemble a second quilt block.
