Make Half-Square Triangle Units

Pair a 4-7/8" fall colored square with a neutral background square of the same size. Use my easy sandwich method to construct two half-square triangle units from the pair. Repeat, making four more units by pairing the fall/background squares. Each completed unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".

Assemble the Old Maid's Puzzle Quilt Block

  1. Arrange the nine block components into three rows. Each row has three units in it as shown above.

  2. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the plain squares when possible.

  3. Sew the three rows together to complete the quilt block. It should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" square.

If you're sewing many blocks, use lots of different fall colors to make the quilt scrappier. The dark triangles will resemble leaves falling from fall trees.
