Use the
sandwich method to assemble all half-square triangle units.
- Combine a red 2-3/8" square with a black square of the same size. Use the sandwich method to make two half-square triangle units from the pair. Each completed unit should measure 2" square.
- Repeat to make a total of 144 red/black half square triangle units.
- Use the same method to make a total of 144 red/white-black half square triangle units of the same size.
- Pair a 6-7/8" white/black square with a black/white square of the same size. Use the sandwich method to make two half-square triangle units from the pair. Each completed unit should measure 6-1/2" square.
- Make a total of 16 identical units.
Assemble the Quilt Block
- Arrange four red/white-black triangle square units in a vertical row as shown. Sew together and press carefully.
- Arrange four red/black triangle square units in a vertical row as shown. Sew together and press carefully.
- Sew vertical rows to a black/white-black large half-square triangle unit after carefully verifying the placement of angles. Press seam allowances towards the large triangle square unit.
- Arrange five red/white-black triangle square units and one red square into a horizontal row as shown. Press and sew to the top of the unit created in step 3.
- Arrange five red/black triangle square units and one red square into a horizontal row as shown. Press and sew to the top of the unit created in step 4.
- Press the quilt block. It should measure 9-1/2" square.
- Make a total of 16 quilt blocks.
