Lady in Red - Variation of the Traditional Lady of the Lake Quilt Block

© Janet Wickell
I took some liberties with the traditional Lady in the Lake quilt block when I wrote this quilt block pattern. Squares replace half-square triangle units at two corners and the arrangement of colors is a bit different. The traditional block uses two fabrics, Lady in Red has three.

The block is suited for a scrappy layout, so that there will be some variation where the squares and half-square triangle units join when blocks are sewn side by side.

Finished Block Size: 9" square

Make (16) 9" x 9" Lady in Red Quilt Blocks

Cutting instructions are for assembling half-square triangle units using the sandwich method. Alter cutting if you use another technique.

Assorted Red Fabrics: about 2 yards total

  • Cut (144) 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" red squares (start with a scrappy selection of 2-3/8" wide red strips)

  • Cut (32) 2" x 2" red squares (start with a scrappy selection of 2" wide red strips)

White Print with Black: 3/4 yard

  • Cut (4) 2-3/8" strips from selvage to selvage; cut (68) 2-3/8" squares from the strips; cut four more 2-3/8" squares from remaining fabric

  • Cut (1) 6-7/8" selvage to selvage strip; cut (6) 6-7/8" squares from the strip; cut two more 6-7/8" squares from remaining fabric

Black Print with White: 3/4 yard
