Make the Strip Pieced Irish Chain Quilt Blocks

Make strip sets for the Irish Chain quilt blocks; cut segments from strip sets; sew quilt blocks together.

Assemble the Strip Sets for the Single Irish Chain

Strip Set A

  1. Sew a dark narrow "A" strip lengthwise to the wider light "A" strip.

  2. Press the seam allowances towards the dark strips.

  3. Use your rotary equipment to square up one end of the strip set, and then cut eight segments from it:

    • 3-1/2" long each for the 12" block
    • 2" long each for the 6" block
    • 1-1/2" long each for the 4" block
Strip Set B
  1. Sew a light narrow "B" fabric strip lengthwise to each side of the wider dark "B" strip.

  2. Press the seam allowances towards the dark strip.

  3. Use your rotary equipment to square up one end of the strip set, and then cut four segments from it:

    • 6-1/2" long each for the 12" block
    • 3-1/2" long each for the 6" block
    • 2-1/2" long each for the 4" block

Assemble the Single Irish Chain Quilt Block

  1. Sew an "A" segment to the top of a "B" segment, matching seam intersections carefully. Press seam allowances towards the "B" segment.

  2. Sew a second "A" Segment to the bottom of the same "B" segment. Press seam allowances towards the "B" segment.

  3. Repeat to make three more Single Irish Chain blocks. Press and measure. Your block should be 1/2" taller and wider than its finished size.
