Improved Four Patch Quilt Pattern

One option for an Improved Four Patch quilt.

Here's one example of a quilt made with Improved Four Patch quilt blocks. Adjacent blocks vary in fabric placement, but the same four fabrics are used throughout.

  • Eighteen blocks have dark brown corner triangles; light squares are sewn next to pieced 4-patch units.

  • Seventeen blocks have light corner triangles; dark brown squares are sewn next to pieced 4-patch units.

  • Some four patch units are positioned so that their red squares "point" sideways.

This quilt finishes at about: 58" x 79"

Quilting fabric needed to piece the quilt top:

Brown: 3 yards

Gold: 3/4 yard

Red: 3/4 yard

Light: 2-1/2 yards

Devise your own layout to determine how many blocks are needed. Refer to the cutting and piecing instructions on pages 1 and 2.

  • Cut (about) nine 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares from each 4-1/2" x selvage width strip; cut two per block

  • Cut (about) six 6-5/8" x 6-5/8" squares from each 6-5/8" x selvage width strip; cut two per block and divide each once diagonally

  • Cut (about) sixteen 2-1/2" segments from strip sets made with 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of red and gold; cut four segments per block

Binding: About 300 running inches of continuous binding (Make Quilt Binding Strips)
