Make the Hour Glass Quilt Block

Use a 1/4" seam allowance to make the Hour Glass quilt block, placing units right sides together for sewing and matching edges. Secure fabric with straight pins if necessary. If your components are consistently too small, sew with a scant quarter-inch seam.
  1. Pair the larger pink tone-on-tone square with the larger neutral square (squares are 2-7/8" for the small block, 4-7/8" for the large block).

  2. Use the easy sandwich method to turn the paired squares into two half square triangle units. The completed units for the small block should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2". The completed units for the large block should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".

  3. Arrange the half square triangle units with the remaining squares, forming three horizontal rows as shown above.

  4. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the floral squares.

  5. Sew rows together, butting seam intersections for a perfect match.

Your completed Hour Glass quilt block should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" or 6-1/2" x 6-1/2". If your block is smaller than it should be, or skewed, press again and recheck. If it still isn't quite right, use my easy squaring-up method before swapping it or sewing it to other blocks.
