Greek Cross Quilt Layout

Even though they appear to differ, all of the Greek Cross quilt blocks in this quilt are constructed in exactly the same way. The differences are a result of varying color and color value arrangements.

The quilt shown finishes at 64-1/2" x 84-1/2", which includes a 1/4" binding.

Light green for blocks and wide border: 3-1/4 yards

Darker green for blocks: 7/8 yard

Brown for narrow border and binding: 1-1/2 yards (you'll need about 323 running inches of doublefold binding strips)

Dark brown for blocks: 1 yard

Medium brown for blocks: 3/4 yard

Quilt Backing: about 5-3/8 yards of a 42" wide fabric, or a panel of wide fabric that measures about 73" x 93" (how to make quilt backing)

Cutting Instructions

Start by cutting a portion of your fabric. Cut remaining fabric after assembling a sample block or two.

For blocks like the Greek Cross in top row, first block on left (18 blocks):

  • (36) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" medium brown squares
  • (36) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" light green squares

Make (72) half square triangle units from squares as directed on page 3.

  • (18) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" green squares for block centers

  • (5) 3-1/4" wide light green strips, each cut selvage to selvage
  • (5) 1-3/4" wide dark brown strips, each cut selvage to selvage

Make strip sets from strips as shown on page 3. Cut a total of (72) 2-1/2" segments from the strip sets.

Use the components above to make 18 quilt blocks; see page 3 for diagrams.

For blocks like the Greek Cross in second row, first block on left (17 blocks):

  • (34) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" dark brown squares
  • (34) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" light green squares

Make (68) half square triangle units from squares as directed on page 3.

  • (17) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" green squares for block centers

  • (5) 3-1/4" wide dark green strips, each cut selvage to selvage
  • (5) 1-3/4" wide medium brown strips, each cut selvage to selvage

Make strip sets from strips as you did previously, but substituting colors. Cut a total of (68) 2-1/2" segments from the strip sets.

Use the components above to make 17 quilt blocks; see page 3 for diagrams and refer to the quilt on this page for layout.

Assembly

Sew the blocks into rows, alternating block types as shown.

Borders

Add the inner border first, then sew the outer border. Sew side borders first for each round.

  • Use 2-1/2" wide brown strips for inner border.
  • Use 5-1/2" wide light green strips for outer border.

Never determine border lengths by measuring the outer edges of a quilt -- it is likely skewed. Borders are an opportunity to square up the quilt. See How to Sew Butted Borders for more information.

Mark the quilt for quilting if necessary and sandwich the top with batting and backing. Quilt. Use the binding strips to add doublefold mitered binding.
