Make the Triangle Squares
You can use any method you like to make the triangle squares that are placed at the corners of this block--squares that each contain two half square triangles. My favorite way to make a small number for scrappy quilts is to sandwich and sew contrasting squares together with two seams, then cut each pair apart to create two triangle square units.Gather your 3-7/8" floral and white squares and sew each light and dark square together as directed here. If you are using slightly larger squares -- I always do -- trim each one back to exactly 3-1/2" after assembly. Use a ruler that lets you divide the unit in half diagonally, so that both sides measure the same.
You should have eight half square triangle units.
Make the Strip Pieced Units
- Sew a 1-1/2" x 15" white strip lengthwise to a floral strip of the same size. Press seam allowance towards the floral strip. Repeat to sew another white strip to the opposite side of the floral. Press seam allowance towards the floral.
- Move the strip set you just assembled to your cutting mat. Square up one end to be a 90-degree angle to the long edge, then cut four 3-1/2" segments from it. (I used longer strips, so the photo shows five segments
- Repeat, sewing the remaining 1-1/2" x 15" strips together the same way, then cutting four 3-1/2" segments from it.
