Five Patch Chain Quilt Block Pattern

The Five Patch Chain quilt block is another in a series of popular designs that, when sewn together, create a diagonal flow across the quilt top. The look can be enhanced by sewing alternate blocks between the Five Patch Chains, like the layout example on page 4.

We'll use quick piecing techniques to assemble the Five Patch Chain quilt block.

Finished Block Size: 10" x 10"

Quilting Fabrics for One Five Patch Chain Quilt Block

The block shown is assembled with four fabrics of varying color value. A deep black/brown is used for dark squares in the eight smaller four patch units and for the block's center. A light neutral print is sewn next to dark squares in the four patches.

Other fabrics are a medium green and a tan/brown that's lighter in value than the green, but darker than the neutral used in four patch blocks.

Black/brown:

  • (1) 1-1/2" x 25" strip
  • (1) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square

Light neutral:

  • (1) 1-1/2" x 25" strip

Light tan/brown:

  • (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square

Medium green:

  • (4) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" bars
