Double Nine-Patch Quilt Block Pattern
Use a 1/4" seam allowance to assemble the quilt block, placing units right sides together for sewing and matching raw edges carefully. Use straight pins to hold fabric together if it helps you keep patches aligned.Make the Strip Sets
Make strip sets A and B, above, and then cut segments from them to assemble the little nine-patch units.
- Make strip set A by sewing a 2" x 42" dark strip lengthwise to each side of a 2" x 42" light strip. Press seam allowances towards the dark strips.
- Use your rotary equipment to square up one end of the strip set, and then cut twenty 2" segments from it.
- Make strip set B by sewing a 2" x 21" light strip lengthwise to each side of a 2" x 21" dark strip. Press seam allowances towards the dark strip.
- Use your rotary equipment to square up one end of the strip set, and then cut ten 2" segments from it.
Make the Small Nine-Patch Units
- Arrange two set A segments with one set B segment into three rows as shown above, placing the B segment in the middle.
- Sew the segments together, matching patches carefully for an exact fit.
- Press seam allowances away from the center row.
- Repeat to make a total of ten nine-patch units.
Assemble the Double Nine-Patch Quilt Blocks
- Arrange five small nine-patch units and four plain 5" squares into three rows as shown. The small nine-patches should form an "X" as illustrated.
- Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the plain squares.
- Sew the rows together to complete the quilt block. Press the seam allowances either direction.
- Repeat to make a second block.
The completed blocks should measure 14" x 14". If your block is smaller than it should be, or skewed, press again and recheck. If it still isn't quite right, use my easy squaring-up method before sewing it to other blocks.
