Crown of Thorns Quilt Block Pattern

The Crown of Thorns quilt block looks intricate, but it isn't at all difficult to make. And while Crown of Thorns does have quite a few patches, many of its units can be assembled easily using quick piecing techniques.

Finished block size: 12" x 12"

Crown of Thorns Quilt Block Fabric & Cutting

Mottled medium-dark green:

  • (1) 4-3/4" x 4-3/4" square; (2) 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" squares

Neutral background

  • (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally

Gold print

  • (2) 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" squares; (2) 3" x 3" squares

Maroon print

  • (2) 3" x 3" squares

Deep purple

  • (4) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares; (3) 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" squares, each cut twice diagonally to produce 8 triangles with the straight grain on the longest edge
