Coffin Star Quilt Example

This example of a Coffin Star quilt illustrates a layout with blocks sewn horizontally, but separated by sashing and cornerstones that finish at 2-1/2" in width. Sketch your quilt layout to determine how many of each are required for your specific design. Cut cornerstone squares that are 3" x 3" and sashing strips that measure 3" x 12-1/2".

Sew sashing bars vertically between blocks in rows and press seam allowances towards the sashing.

Sew cornerstones and sashing into narrow horizontal separator rows, pressing seam allowances towards the squares. Join all rows.

Yardages for a Quilt with 24 Blocks as shown, about 60" x 84"

Yardage for 16-patch centers is an estimate, and will very per fabric depending on how many of each fabric is used throughout the quilt.

Patchwork centers: approximately 2 yards total

Setting triangles to surround patchwork centers: 1-3/4 yards

Cornerstones: 3/8 yard

Sashing: 2 yards
