- When you cut the head for the 12-inch block, replace the single 3" x 4-1/2" piece with two pieces: a 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" piece for the head and a 1" x 4-1/2" strip for the collar. Cut the collar from a striped or plaid fabric for an instant textured look. Sew the narrow strip to the bottom of the cat's head and finish assembling as directly.
- Appliqué a bow or a string of bells to the collar. Cut out pictorials from a novelty fabric to make the appliqué a breeze.
- Sew buttons on the cat's head to create eyes and a nose. Embroider a simple mouth on your kitty if you like -- and add some whiskers.
- Try realistic fabrics for the cat's body and use holiday fabrics for the outer frame.
Make a 24-inch Cat Block
A 24-inch block is a nice size for a wallhanging. Surround it with multiple borders to expand its size a bit more.

- One 6" x 8-1/2" bar (head); Alternative with collar: one 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" bar and one 1-1/2" x 8-1/2" bar
- Two 4" x 4" squares (ears)
Fabric for Background
- Two 4-1/2" x 16-1/2" bars for frame**
- Two 4-1/2" x 24-1/2" bars for frame**
- One 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" square (background)
- One 4" x 8-1/2" bar (ear background)
- One 4" x 4" square (tail cutout)
**Cut the framing bars from a different fabric if you want them to look like a frame around the quilt block.
