Make a quilt entirely from California Crossroads if you prefer -- you'll discover many layout variations. That type of layout has the best colorplay when the quilt is either scrappy or when colors are varied at least a bit from block to block.
Always cut only enough fabric for a sample block; make the sample before cutting all of the fabric for your quilt.
