Cactus Pot Quilt Block Pattern

Use a 1/4" seam allowance to make the Cactus Pot quilt block, placing units right sides together for sewing and matching edges. Secure fabric with straight pins if necessary. If your components are consistently too small, use a scant quarter-inch seam.

12" Block

  1. Pair each 3-7/8" neutral square with a paisley square of the same size. Use my easy sandwich method to make eight half-square triangle units from the pairs; units will be 3-1/2" square.

  2. Cut the 3-7/8" turquoise squares in half once diagonally. Sew a triangle to the short end of a background rectangle as shown. Make another unit that's a mirror image of the first as shown. Press seam allowances towards the rectangle. Make another pair.

  3. Use the sandwich method to make two paisley/turquoise half square triangle units from the 6-7/8" squares, or cut each square in half once diagonally as shown and sew together to make units that measure 6-1/2" square when complete.

  4. Sew two paisley/background triangle square units together as shown - left in middle row of drawing. Sew a 3-1/2" background square to the left end of unit. Press seam allowances towards the square.

  5. Sew two paisley/background triangle squares together vertically as shown. Press seams towards the darker fabric. Sew this unit to the left side of the large paisley/turquoise triangle square. Press seam allowance towards the large triangle square.

  6. Sew the top strip to the Step 5 unit. Press seam allowance towards upper strip.

  7. Sew the rectangular units to the Step 6 unit. Press seam allowances towards the rectangular units.

  8. Cut the 6-7/8" background square in half once diagonally (not shown). Center and sew a triangle under the Cactus Pot "legs." Press seam towards triangle. The block should measure 12-1/2" square.
