Make a Scrappy Buckeye Beauty Quilt

This version of the Buckeye Beauty quilt block was designed for a block swap on our Quilting Forum.

1. Make the half square triangle units as directed on previous pages, but use a light and a medium lavender / purple for each 5-7/8" square. Use the same two fabrics in a single block's triangle square units.

2. Instead of constructing a strip-pieced set, cut four light and four dark 3" squares for one block's four patch units. Do not repeat fabrics. Sew a light square to a dark square and press the seam towards the dark square. Repeat.

3. Sew the two four patch units together so that contrasting squares are opposite each other. Press seam either direction.

4. Repeat to make another scrappy four patch unit.

5. Assemble block rows as shown on page 2. Connect rows to complete the block.

Strip Piece it Scrappy

Strip piece the block and use scraps from your stash by sewing more fabrics into shorter strip sets. Refer to pages 1 and 2.

Very Dark

• Four different fabrics, each 3" x 12-1/2"

Very Light

• Four different fabrics, each 3" x 12-1/2"

Medium & Light

• Unchanged

Make the Block

1. Sew the light and dark strips into four different strip sets, square up the ends, then cut four 3" segments from each.

2. Create three stacks, each containing four different strip sets. Use the sets in each stack to make two unmatched four patch units.

3. Make the other components and assemble the block, taking care to sew unmatched four patch units into each one.
