The Broken Branch Quilt Block Pattern
You might recognize the Broken Branch quilt block. The same general design has been sewn in a variety of ways over the years with alterations to the sizes of its square, large triangles and half-square triangle units. This version has more half-square triangle units along it's edges than some variations, giving it a more delicate appearance.
Finished Block Size: 15" x 15"
The larger block size makes this a good choice for a medallion wallhanging -- put it on point or straight set at the center of a quilt and work outwards with borders and/or smaller blocks. But it will work just fine used in a quilt by itself or with alternate squares.

- (1) 8" x 8" square, cut in half once diagonally (read options on page 4 before cutting)
Dark green:
- (1) 1-3/8" x 11-1/2" bar (read options on page 4 before cutting)
**Triangle square units made from small gold and background squares finish at 1-1/2" x 1-1/2". When I make units this small, I prefer to cut squares oversize, and then trim back each unit to its unfinished size (in this case 2") before sewing the block.
This pattern uses the easy sandwich method to assemble half square triangle units; alter cutting instructions to make units with a different technique.
Miniature quilt fans -- watch for a mini, paper pieced version of this quilt block sometime during Block-A-Day March, 2009.
