Make a Bird's Nest quilt.

This Bird's Nest quilt finishes at about 50" x 70". It's made by assembling 17 blocks using fabrics cut and illustrated on pages 1 through 3. Its 18 remaining Bird's Nest blocks are sewn in the configuration shown on page 1, right illustration. Refer to the illustration and switch fabrics to make the variation.

Cutting for One Bird's Nest Quilt Block, Right Variation, Page 1

Light beige:

  • (3) 4" x 4" squares, each cut in half twice diagonally, for side triangles used in mid-point bar units

  • (6) 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for corner triangles used at the ends of mid-point bar units

Deepest red/burgundy:

  • (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, for half square triangle units used in block corners

  • (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for half square triangle units sewn next to mid-point bar units

Multicolor floral print:

  • (9) 2" x 2" squares, for squares used in mid-point bar units

  • (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, for half square triangle units used in block corners; draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of each

  • (4) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for individual half square triangles sewn next to floral print

    Deep red/burgundy: 2-1/2 yards

    Beige/neutral: 2 yards

    Multicolor floral: 1-7/8 yards
