About those little units. Technically, you can make the HST units with a pair of 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, sewing them together and then cutting them apart to produce two HST units (the quick sandwich method of construction). But these units are tiny, with no room for error, so I encourage you to use larger than necessary squares and then trim the completed HST units to 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" after assembly. You'll find that exactly-sized units provide a more accurate quilt block that's easier to assemble.
Trim-back instructions are on page 5 of the Easy Sandwich Method tutorial.
Finished block size: 12" x 12"
My color and value suggestions offer a visual for construction, change elements to suit you.
Look at the quilt block variations on page 2 before you begin -- you might decide to alter your block's layout just a bit.
Medium light to light squares
- for small half square triangle units: (12) 2-1/8" x 2-1/8" OR 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" squares (you'll cut back finished HST units after assembly)
- for individual half square triangles: (6) 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
Medium dark to dark squares
- for small half square triangle units: (12) squares the same size you chose for small light squares, above (you're cutting back finished HST units after assembly)
- for individual half square triangles: (6) 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
Note: Corrected an error in the number of squares to cut in half; original instructions said 12.
Red for star tips: (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares
Green for inner "pinwheel": (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
Neutral light for background: can be more than one fabric:
- (4) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares
- (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares
- (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
