Saw Tooth Patchwork Block
Saw Tooth Patchwork is a traditional quilt block that's also been known by other names, including Mrs. Brown's Choice. As you can see in the illustration, the block looks very different when you alter the placement of color and color value within its patchwork. I've shown only four examples -- you can create many others.Saw Tooth Patchwork is the third quilt block pattern for the Backwards Medallion Sampler quilt pattern, but you can use the pattern to create a quilt of your own design.
Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"
I've also included cutting instructions for a 12" (finished) Saw Tooth Patchwork quilt block at the bottom of the page, but remember that the smaller block is used in the Medallion Sampler Quilt.
Quilting Fabrics & Cutting Chart
The colors in the cutting chart will make a quilt block that's similar to the top left block in the illustration. Change colors and values as desired.Vary print sizes, but try to avoid large prints, due to the small sizes of patches in a 6" quilt block. Try one or more tone on tone fabrics, because they add visual texture without overwhelming a design. Avoid directional fabrics for small squares that will become triangles at the corners of square-in-a-square units.
To Make One 6" Saw Tooth Patchwork Quilt Block:
The quilt block is made up of five square-in-a-square units and four half square triangle units (all quick-pieced).For square-in-a-square blocks used in the midpoints of rows:
- Green print: (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares
- White or very light print: (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares
- Black print: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares
For block center:
- Brown print: (1) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square
- Red print: (4) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares
For half square triangle units used in block corners:
- Green print: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares*
- Brown brown print: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares*
*You might prefer to cut these squares slightly oversize, and then trim the finished half square triangle units back to their correct unfinished size before using them in the block; follow the link to instructions on the next page.
