Road to California Quilt Block Pattern

The name Road to California and Rocky Road to California have been used to describe several quilt blocks, some very similar to this and some with different components.

The design is similar to other quilt blocks, too, including Jacob's Ladder. The good news -- Rocky Road to California is beginner-friendly.

Road to California makes a wonderful addition to a scrap quilt, and that's one reason I chose to include it in the Scrap Happy Sampler Quilt.

Finished block size: 12" x 12"

For the Scrap-Happy Sampler Quilt

Pay no attention to my fabric choices; the color/value suggestions below are just that - suggestions. This is a scrap quilt, so choose your own colors and your own color value placements. My block is simply a guide.

Medium dark or dark for block corners: (2) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares

Very dark for four patch units (three of the four patches run on the block's diagonal): (1) 2-1/2" x 15-1/2" strip

Light for background -- can be the same fabric or a mixture: (1) 2-1/2" x 15-1/2" strip for four patches; (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares for half square triangle units

Medium to dark warm: (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares for half square triangle units (remember that warms typically pop out, so even a light warm, like a yellow, could have as much impact as a dark)
