Meet the Lost Ship Quilt Block
Lost Ships Quilt Block Pattern

Two versions of the Lost Ships quilt block, one more scrappy than the other.

Lost Ship is one of the quilt blocks used to create the Scrap Happy Sampler, a 12-block quilt.

Look at the blocks chosen for the sampler quilt and you'll see that, like Lost Ship, many of the other blocks are packed with half square triangle units -- units that allow us to go super scrappy if that's the look we're trying to achieve.

Two examples of the Lost Ship quilt block are shown, to help illustrate the different appearance of an orderly look vs. a scrappy layout. Choose the format that suits your style and change colors in any way you like.

Finished block size: 12" x 12"

Fabrics & Cutting Chart for One 12" Lost Ship Quilt Block

Mix up your colors or choose one for each unit in the chart.

Dark(s) for small half square triangle units: (10) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares**

Light(s) for small half square triangle units: (10) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares**

Medium(s) for larger half square triangle units: (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares**

Medium light(s) for larger half square triangle units: (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares**

**Squares are used to make half square triangle (HST) units. I usually cut them slightly larger than necessary and then trim the finished units back to the exact size to enhance accuracy. You'll find trim-back instructions within the HST assembly tutorial.
