Flock of Geese Block
Flock of Geese is a traditional patchwork quilt block designed to resemble what we sometimes see in the sky -- flocks of geese in formation, soaring overhead. The quilt block is assembled with half square triangle units sewn in two sizes. I chose mostly warm colors to design this Flock of Geese block, mixing a gold, an orange-rust fabric and a neutral with a multicolor fabric that’s mostly rust and green.
Make the Flock of Geese Scrappy or Follow a Theme
The Flock of Geese quilt block is a good choice for a scrap quilt. You can sew a somewhat controlled scrappy quilt by stitching all of the larger half square triangle units (shown here as gold and rust) from the same two fabrics, and the small 'flocks' from a variety of scraps from your stash. But feel free to make every aspect of the block from a scrappy assortment -- the choice is yours. The quilt block can be sewn to resemble nature, or in bright colors that have absolutely no resemblance to the colors seen in a true flock of geese. How about batik fabrics? Or reproductions from the 1920's and 1930's? Florals? Interpret the flock any way you desire.
You might also prefer to use darker (or warmer) fabrics for the dark halves of smaller triangles, to help them 'pop' more in the final layout. For ideas, read about color value and color wheel basics. Finished Flock of Geese Quilt Block: 12" x 12"
