Finish Sewing the Arizona Quilt Block
Arizona's rows can be assembled in a couple of ways. I chose this method because it puts the quilt block together in larger chunks (versus narrow rows) that don't tend to stretch.Make Four Corner Units
- Gather two half square triangle units prepared for corners (medium green/black with red floral), one 2-1/2" green square and one half square triangle unit made from the two reds.
- Sew the components into two rows as shown, upper left. Press seam allowances towards the black/green units. Join the rows, butting the center seam for a perfect match. The unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".
- Make three more identical units.
Make Units for the Block's Outer Midpoints
- Gather one 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" gold rectangle and one flying geese unit. Sew the units together as shown, lower right. Press seam allowance towards the gold rectangle. The unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".
- Make three more identical units.
For a different look, flip the geese unit around before sewing it to the gold rectangle (or mock-up your components before you sew, to see if you'd like that option). Lots of people are making multiples of each block -- try one of each layout for a bit of variation.
Assemble the Quilt Block
- Arrange all units into three rows as shown (the middle row is shown already assembled; just place the gold bars against the red square).
- Join components in each row. Press seam allowances in top and bottom rows towards the geese/bar unit. Press seam allowances in middle row towards the gold bar.
- Join the rows, butting seam intersections for a perfect match. Press. The block should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".
