Amish Baskets Quilt Block Pattern
Nearly all traditional Amish quilts are made from solid fabrics, not prints, although the colors used in vintage Amish quilts vary, and are typically related to the colors chosen for other sewing within the community where the quilts were made. Do feel free to work with your own color palette to create a slightly Amish quilt -- sew what you love.Fabric colors within my cutting instructions are there to help you visualize patch placement -- choose colors that suit your own tastes. Another color arrangement is illustrated on page 3, where you'll find an example of a nine-block Amish Baskets Quilt.
Do you like applique quilts? Sew flowers in the large triangle used below the basket "handles." If you're not into applique, how about yo-yos? They make excellent dimensional "flowers," and can be dressed up by sewing buttons or beads at their centers.

Cutting for ONE Amish Baskets Quilt Block
Cutting instructions assume you will use the easy sandwich method to make half square triangle units. You might need to alter patch sizes if you use another method, such as pre-printed templates. The units finish at 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" (in other words, they measure 3" x 3" before sewing them to their neighbors. Cut squares slightly larger than necessary to improve accuracy by making oversize units, and then cutting back to the correct size (method is included in my instructions).Rust: (4) 3-3/8" x 3-3/8" squares
Pale green for background: (4) 3-3/8" x 3-3/8" squares; (1) 3" x 3" square; (2) 3" x 10-1/2" bars; (1) 5-7/8" x 5-7/8" square, cut in half once diagonally (you'll have an extra for a second block)
Deep royal blue: ((1) 10-7/8" x 10-7/8" square, cut in half once diagonally (you'll have an extra for a second block)
Black: (1) 5-7/8" x 5-7/8" square, cut in half once diagonally (you'll have an extra for a second block); (1) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" square
Light blue: (4) 3-3/8" x 3-3/8" squares (cut two of the squares in half once diagonally)
Medium green: (2) 3-3/8" x 3-3/8" squares
