Intro to the Quilt Block Pattern
Album Star is one of the quilt block patterns for the Scrap Happy Sampler Quilt, but use the pattern for a quilt of your own design.Mix up your own fabrics in any way you like, and print the drawing on page 3 to experiment with placement of colors from the color wheel. Don't forget to consider color values when you design your quilt block.
Finished block size: 12" x 12"
I wanted this block to be somewhat vibrant, with both darks and jewel tones. I chose green and an almost-black for the half square triangle units at the quilt block's corners -- fabrics with a bit of contrast, but not overly so. You might prefer a totally different look.
If you want to use the block as a true album, make the middle strip of the block's center patchwork unit from a fabric that you can write on visibly, and then add your signature or any other notation.
Almost Black: (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares; (1) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" bar
Dark Green print: (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares
Deep red print: (2) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" bars
Light Blue background print: (4) 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles
Purple/fuchsia print: (8) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares
Flying Geese Option
The light blue and purple/fuchsia prints are used to make flying geese units that become star tips. The method used in this pattern is perfect when you're working from scraps, but the no-waste flying geese method is easy, and saves fabric. To try the no-waste method, follow the link to an illustration and explanation of the technique, but replace the colors and sizes shown with one 7-1/4" x 7-1/4" light blue square and four 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" purple squares.
