Basket Quilt Patterns

Loads of half square triangle units provide a super-scrappy appearance for this quilt block, but the blocks look just a good designed in an orderly fashion if scraps aren't your thing. This basket block is large, finishing at 15" square, and a batch of them will make a quilt top in no time.

Arrange the blocks on-point and their finished width increases to about 21-inches. Remember that you'll need to cut setting triangles to fill-in around the edges of an on-point quilt layout.

Here's a 12-inch basket quilt block that was originally part of the Scrap Happy Sampler quilt. Like many other basket quilt blocks, it's made with lots of half-square triangle units. Every quilt block pattern on the Quilting Web site is a stand-alone document, so feel free to use them to design your own quilts, rather than just using them in my patterns.

These pretty basket quilt blocks were originally featured in a swap on the Quilting Forum. The baskets are not difficult at all to make, and you can choose different (but easy) methods to add a handle. The quilt block instructions outline the types of fabrics used in the forum event, and they look super sewn that way, but always feel free to change fabrics to suit your needs. The basket blocks finish at 6-inches square and would make a lovely baby quilt.

Woven Baskets has a half-square triangle unit base and handle, but the design looks a little like a dual basket. Play around with colors and color values to create a totally different look for your Woven Baskets quilt blocks.

Amish Baskets is another large quilt block, finishing at 15-inches square. You can make it in the Amish style (solid fabrics) as shown, or change the design completely by sewing with florals, geometrics, reproduction prints, batiks or any other type of fabric you desire. I'm a big fan of Civil War era prints, but 1920s and 1930s fabrics might be a nice choice for this pretty basket quilt block.

I love this basket quilt block. It's large, 16-inches square, and has loads of patchwork. Make the block in an orderly design, as shown, or grab fabrics from your scrap bin and really mix it up. The blocks look great in either an on-point or straight setting (sewn horizontally, side by side). One of these blocks, placed on-point, creates a striking medallion center for a wallhanging.

Traditional Grape Baskets quilt blocks are arranged on-point in this quilt, and separated by Oak Leaf & Acorn applique blocks. The quilt finishes at about 60" x 70", but you can use my yardage calculation instructions to determine how much fabric you'll need for a larger version.

Choose the size that works best for you, either a 20" basket block or a 10" version. The larger block makes a nice medallion center, and is perfect for throw pillow covers. It's larger scale also works nicely on a king sized bed. You'll find an on-point wallhanging idea on page 3 of the pattern.

It doesn't take many pieces of patchwork to create the Cactus Pot quilt block, but I love the design. You'll find instructions for two block sizes in the pattern -- a 12" square block and a 4" square miniature version. The block is a good choice for beginning quilters who want to learn how to make half-square triangle units, but don't want to be overwhelmed with making huge batches of them.
