Fruit Basket Quilt Block Pattern

This version of Fruit Basket is a quilt block with a basket in each of its four corners. The baskets each have handles that can be created with applique, or by choosing another technique -- you could use ribbon, lace or rickrack for the handles, or perhaps embroidery. You could even eliminate the handle and replace it with appliequed floral (or other) motifs cut from printed fabric. Another choice -- yoyos, which would provide a bit of extra depth. You might even choose a mix of techniques for your baskets.

If you prefer a traditional handle, download the Fruit Basket handle template, a PDF file. Print at 100%; do not allow your printer to scale the image. Read the instructions on page 2 before cutting handles.

My block has a light neutral background, a subtle print. Its four baskets are cut from two fabrics, but make yours very scrappy if that suits you. The quilt block finishes at 12" x 12"

Fruit Basket Cutting Chart

The size for large basket triangles is calculated using the formula for corner triangles of an on point quilt.

Neutral Background Fabric

• (1) 7" x 7" square
• (4) 2" x 6-1/2" bars
• (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares

Colorful Basket Fabric 2

• (1) 5-3/8" x 5-3/8" square, cut in half once diagonally
• (2) 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
• (2) basket handles from template (or use another method of choice)

• (1) 5-3/8" x 5-3/8" square, cut in half once diagonally
• (2) 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally
