Pinwheel quilt blocks can be assembled in many ways. We’ll make this baby quilt's pinwheels with quick-pieced quarter-square triangle units -- that method automatically surrounds the pinwheels with setting triangles. Half of the pinwheel blocks are mirror images of the rest. Use another method if you prefer, but alter cutting instructions to suit a different technique.

Cutting Instructions

Fabric E – Mottled Sky Fabric

  • (6) 5-1/4” x 5-1/4” squares
  • (12) 4-7/8” x 4-7/8” squares

Fabric F – Peachy Pink Tone-on-Tone Print

  • (6) 5-1/4” x 5-1/4” squares

Quilt Block Assembly

  1. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of each 5-1/4” x 5-1/4” mottled sky square. Pair a marked square with a peachy pink square of the same size. Use easy sandwich piecing method to create two half-square triangle units from the pair. When complete, each unit should measure 4-7/8” x 4-7/8”.

  2. Repeat to make a total of twelve identical units.

  3. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of each 4-7/8” x 4-7/8” mottled sky square. Use the same quick-piecing technique to sew a marked square to a half-square triangle unit, positioning the line to flow across the seam of the half-square triangle unit. See: Quarter Square Triangle Unit Instructions for more information.

  4. Cut apart on the marked line as before to create two mirror image quarter-square triangle units that measure 4-1/2” x 4-1/2” (top left illustration).

  5. Repeat to make a total of 24 quarter square triangle units. Stack like-units together.

  6. Arrange four quarter-square triangle units from one stack to create a 2-row pinwheel block with the large mottled sky fabric at its corners. Compare your units to the illustration (left middle illustration) to determine which stack to use for the first block.

  7. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances in adjoining rows in opposite directions and then sew rows together. Press. If you feel the seam is too bulky, press it open or fan it out at the pinwheel’s midpoint and press each side of the seam in opposite directions. The quilt block should measure 8-1/2” x 8-1/2”.

  8. Repeat to make two more pinwheel blocks identical to the first.

  9. Make three pinwheel blocks from the remaining quarter square triangle units. They will be be mirror images of the first three blocks (left bottom illustration).
