Hearts Bouquet is a small quilt that's made by surrounding a focal applique block with borders, one constructed from patchwork rectangles. Three heart 'flowers' grow at the ends of stems emerging from a basket.

  • The quilt finishes at 17-1/2" x 17-1/2", which includes a 1/4" wide binding around its perimeter.
  • The applique block finishes at 10" square.

Choose fabrics to suit your needs -- they needn't resemble mine.

Use your favorite applique method to construct the center block. A few choices:

Background for Applique Quilt Block

Cut (1) 12" x 12" square (oversize to allow easier squaring up later)

Fabrics for the Quilt's Borders

Patchwork border above and below the quilt block: (12) 1-1/2" x 3" scraps

Wide inner side borders: (2) 3" x 10-1/2" strips

Top and bottom solid borders that are sewn above and below patchwork borders: (2) 2" x 15-1/2" strips

Outer border: cut (2) 1-1/2" x 15-1/2" and (2) 1-1/2" x 17-1/2" it's often best to wait until you've assembled the quilt top before cutting its final borders

Other Materials

Quilt batting (try low loft) and backing: about 23" square each should be plenty

Binding: about 95 continuous inches of doublefold binding to finish at 1/4" wide (quilt binding strip instructions)
