First Anniversary Sampler Quilt - Final Layout Instructions

I wrote patterns for the first Anniversary Sampler Quilt over a one year period, and now it's time to finish it. The sampler quilt has twelve blocks, each one 12-inches square. All of the patterns are archived in the master sampler quilt index, and always will be for anyone who would like to make the quilt.

Refer to those documents if you make the sampler quilt, but keep in mind that you can use this layout for any group of twelve quilt blocks that finish at 12-inches square.

Sampler quilt blocks are arranged on point and separated by sashing and cornerstones. The interior sashing is a lighter shade than the strips that frame the outside of the quilt blocks. Look at the illustration and you'll see that some sashing strips have pieced triangles at their ends that create stars where they come together to meet cornerstones.

The midpoints along the quilt's exterior are framed with four single triangles, while pieced units are sewn to the outer corners. Two borders complete the quilt.

Fabric Selection

Fabric yardages are listed in the Sampler Introduction.

Use my color descriptions as a visual guide, but be sure to choose colors that work with your quilt. If you haven't chosen your sashing fabrics yet, I suggest you place your quilt blocks on a design wall, leaving some space between them and arranging them on point as shown.

Shuffle the blocks around until you like the layout -- you'll have time to make changes as you work. Now that blocks are all together, what colors of types of fabrics will look best between your blocks? Leave the blocks on the wall if you can, because your opinion about colors and arrangement will change if you let the quilt sink into your thoughts for a few days.
