Sampler Quilt - Block #5

The fifth block for the About.com 2007 Anniversary Sampler is a variation of the traditional Chariot Wheel quilt block. It's partially strip pieced to speed things along, and is made with squares and bars -- you won't find even one stretchy selvage edge in the entire block!

Like other Sampler Quilt blocks, the Chariot Wheel finishes at 12-inches square and will be arranged on-point in the finished quilt.

Chariot Wheel Quilt Block - Fabrics

The colors illustrated above are for clarity. Choose fabrics that work with your quilt's theme.

Fabric A: Medium warmish rust: one 2-3/4" x 24" strip (allows extra for squaring up)

Fabric B: Light warm yellow-gold, 2-3/4" x 20" strip (allows extra for squaring up)

Fabric C: Deep rose/burgundy, nine 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares

Fabric D: Light to medium green, 2-3/4" x 20" strip (allows extra for squaring up)

Fabric E: Dark green, one 2-3/4" x 24" strip (allows extra for squaring up)

Before You Begin

The quilt block pattern includes strip piecing instructions for fairly narrow widths of fabric, so seam allowance variations can make a significant difference in the finished block. Before you begin, make sure you can sew an accurate quarter-inch seam allowance.
