Slotted Spools Quilt Block

About the Spools Design Variation

I experimented a bit with the traditional patchwork Spools quilt block to devise this design. The name Slotted Spools seemed a natural, because when you open a spool to expose the background, each of the four spools in the block does appear to have a vertical slot along its length.

Spools blocks are traditionally assembled with set-in seams, but we'll use quick piecing techniques instead.

Choose an entirely different set of fabrics for your own blocks, either orderly or scrappy. Notice that a pinwheel-like design is created by black bars at the block's center. You could make the pinwheel more visible by sewing those bars with a fourth fabric, one that contrasts with the spools.

Slotted Spools was used in the Backwards Medallion Sampler quilt project.
