The Quilt Block and PatternThis patchwork quilt block comes closest to matching the Greek Cross design, but has narrow sashing, with cornerstones, that flows around its outer edges. The block is part of the Backwards Medallion Sampler quilt, but do feel free to use it for any design that requires a 6-inch square quilt block.
The quilt block is made up of four half square triangle units that are separated by patchwork bars. A narrow frame surrounds the block's interior. We'll strip piece and quick piece a portion of the quilt block.
If you sew multiples of the block for an entire quilt, alter the contrast of the outer sashing and cornerstones to create contrast where blocks meet when placed side by side. You could also sew sashing between like-blocks, with our without cornerstones.
Finished Quilt Block: 6" x 6"
Some patchwork is small, leaving little room for error. Check your quarter-inch seam allowance on scraps and sew a scant quarter-inch seam if units are smaller than they should be after assembly. Careful pressing can often correct units that at first seem a bit small.
Fabric Requirements and CuttingUse my color choices as a guide, but select fabrics that work with your own quilt.
Gold print for half square triangle units: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares**
Blue print for half square triangle units: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares**
Bright red print for inner bars and block center:
- (1) 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" bar for strip pieced inner patchwork, plus (1) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" square
- (5) 1-1/2" squares to piece individual patches
Black print for inner bars and cornerstones:
- (1) 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" bar for strip pieced inner patchwork, plus (4) 1 x 1" squares for frame
- (4) 1-1/2" squares to piece individual patches (you'll still need the (4) 1" x 1" squares
Dark red print for outer narrow frame: (4) 1" x 5-1/2" bars
Note: to sew multiple blocks, a portion of the frame could be strip pieced; see page 3.**Cut squares slightly larger and then trim back after half square triangle unit assembly as shown in the tutorial referred to on page 2.
