Make a 6" Square Buckeye Beauty Quilt Block

This 6" square version of the Buckeye Beauty quilt block was used for a previous Quilting Forum event. Follow the guidelines to make the same types of blocks our forum members swapped, or mix up the colors in any way you like. A color wheel can help you decide which colors might look perfect when combined in the blocks.

You'll make pairs of Buckeye Beauty blocks. Sew the first with a purple path and green corners as directed below. Make a second by using green in the strip sets and purple in the corner half-square triangle units.

To make a larger block, refer to my 10" Buckeye Beauty quilt block pattern. Refer back to that pattern for some assembly illustrations.

Fabrics for the First Buckeye Beauty Quilt Block

  • White-on-White (WoW) for light squares in four-patch units
  • WoW for half square triangle units
  • Purple tone-on-tone for dark squares in four-patch units
  • Green tone-on-tone for half square triangle units

Each patch i 6" Buckeye Beauty blocks is relatively small, so avoid large scale prints. That type of print may look very different from patch-to-patch, and detract from a block's color scheme.

Buckeye Beauty Quilt Block Cutting Chart

Purple Fabric Portions of the quilt block are assembled with quick-pieced half square triangle units, popular components that can be constructed in many ways. Cutting instructions are suitable for the method linked in the instructions, which pair the 3-7/8" squares. Alter cutting to use another method. If this is your first experience with the units, cut your squares slightly oversize, and then trim them back to the required 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" before sewing them into the block. Trim-back instructions are included on page 5 of the tutorial linked below.

  • Cut one strip 2" x 9" long

WoW Fabric

  • Cut one strip 2" x 9" long
  • Cut one 3-7/8" square
Green Fabric
  • Cut one 3-7/8" square

Buckeye Beauty Block Assembly

  1. Assemble a strip set as shown on page 2 of the larger Buckeye Beauty pattern, but substitute the 9" long WoW and purple strips for the longer strips used in the 10" version of the block.
  2. Press the strip set's seam allowance towards the darker fabric and square up one end. Cut four 2" segments from the set.
  3. Use the segments to create two four-patch units, placing like colors on the diagonal in each.
  4. Use the quick pieced half square triangle method to create two half-square triangle units from the 3-7/8" WoW and green squares. Each completed unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2".
  5. Assemble the block as shown on the page linked above -- you can see the differences in blocks on this page -- placing the green triangles in two corners and arranging the purple squares in four-patch units to flow diagonally between them. WoW areas of the four-patch units and half-square triangles should meet. Press the quilt block.
  6. The quilt block should measure 6-1/2" x 6-1/2".

Make the Second Buckeye Beauty Quilt Block

Assemble the second quilt block in the same way, but cut the fabric as follows in order to switch the positions of green and purple in the finished block.

Green Fabric

WoW Fabric

  • Cut one strip 2" x 9" long
