An Easy Quilt Block Pattern

Choose from one of two sizes and stitch a batch of Johnny Round the Corner quilt blocks.

  • The 6-inch version is used as block number 10 in the Backwards Medallion Sampler quilt, but can be sewn into any project you desire.

  • The larger Johnny Round the Corner quilt block finishes at 12-inches square.

Try a focal fabric of some sort for the quilt block's center -- my example uses a bright paisley print. If you make a scrap quilt, try to keep contrast (color value) somewhat consistent in specific areas from block to block -- for instance, use several darks with similar contrast.

Johnny Round the Corner works nicely in an orderly arrangement, but looks best when you sew a quilt with two different color layouts for the blocks. That way, when adjoining blocks are sewn side-by-side, like-fabrics won't meet at intersections to create overly large areas of one fabric.

Of course, you could also sew sashing between blocks or choose another quilt block that meshes with this design.

Try swapping out the location of fabrics -- dark where there's currently a light.

Change colors to suit your needs.
