In 2007, I wrote twelve block patterns for a sampler quilt that marked my first anniversary of writing the Quilting site. It was very popular, and I've had lots of requests for more. So I had an idea... let's do a scrap sampler, with blocks that finish at 12-inches square.

I'm not going to list yardages for this quilt -- the idea is to use your scraps (the final layout will be a mystery). If you don't have scraps, pick up some fat quarters or fat eighths of fabric and play along as we go. Some of the blocks will use patterns that are already on the Web site -- designs that are scrap-happy. We'll do a couple a month, and then put them all together (I will give yardages for that!). And I'll offer some layout variations to show just how easy it is to customize a pattern to design your very own quilt. Keep in mind that you'll end up with 12 blocks -- make an extra (or two) of each to create a larger quilt.

I do have an ulterior motive for this quilt -- I hope to use the photos you submit to create the 2012 Quilting Calendar.

Hello Janet… I wanted to tell you that I have a friend who sent this Scrap-Happy Sampler Quilt idea to me and since then, we have gathered 6 quilters to make these quilts! Four of us are from NC, one is in MT, and one is in WA!! We are sending pics to each other of our finished blocks. I also am making 2 blocks so I can learn to quilt-as-you-go on one set. We are anxiously looking forward to the next block. Thank you for creating this ‘game’ at such a time! We are all so happy to have another project and friends to work with. Even far apart!!!
Sincerely,
Judy Sanvitis

Hi Judy, that’s excellent! And I’d love to see all of your blocks (and quilts). Watch for a new pattern on Sunday, December 5th. I might be able to get the pattern written before then, but probably not – so that date is “safe.” And, P.S., I’m in NC, too.

I’ve done the first 3 blocks. Did I miss an announcement for #4?

The announcement was in the newsletter. I had a computer crash and have to redo things. Another block next week. Right now we’re doing the Mystery Quilt (also had to be redone); that and the 2011 Calendar took priority (also had to be redone).

Thanks, Janet. This is my first attempt at a scrap sampler. I’m using leftover fabrics from a “crayola” quilt I did for my son a few years back. Don’t know what I’ll do with it, but it’s been fun!
