Quick & Easy H Quilt
Wednesday June 3, 2009
Try this colorful H quilt the next time you want to go scrappy. I've included a couple of options in the pattern. One lets you strip piece sixteen groups of four identical H units, and then mix them up in the layout. The other gives you cutting instructions for one block, to help you attack the fabrics in your scrap bin (you might want to go with a combination of the two methods to make the best use of available fabrics). The quilt finishes at about 42" x 42" -- make it larger by sewing more of these simple blocks.Janet Wickell

i usually find about.com quite good, but there’s nothing in this whole quilting section that actually explains how to make a quilt, step-by-step, to an absolute beginner – it all presumes that you’re already a quilter. does anyone know where one can find an online resource that explains things to a novice without plunging straight into block patterns and the best available rotary cutter? something along the lines of “you cut out the shapes, then sew them together like this, then somehow sew on padding then sew it all together”, with lots of pictures?? would be massively appreciated!
Lorelei,
Click on the name of the pattern on this site, and you will find specific instructions for the blocks, which have links on say, how to rotary cut. You can also search specific topics, like “binding a quilt” on this site. Furthermore, another site I find very helpful is quilterscache.com. There is an excellent “how to” section there. And, we’re all here, all ready to help a new quilter. Trust me, post a question, and you’ll have all the help you can stand!
As Mrs. B. mentioned, instructions are throughout the site about the topics you mentioned, and more. Look near the top of the page, at the “file folder” labels. Click on Learn to Make a Quilt. You’ll find many topics there. You can also use the red Search box in the upper right hand corner to locate articles on specific subjects. Patterns are the Number 1 requested topic on this site, but I do cover the basics.
