Easy Sew and Turn Applique

Thursday February 5, 2009
Do you dread applique? Do you cringe at the thought of turning under narrow patch edges, and keeping them neatly folded while you sew? You aren't alone. I think more quilters are intimidated by that task than by actually sewing shapes to a background. There are lots of ways to applique without fooling around too much with edges, and sew and turn is one of the easiest. If you can sandwich materials together and machine sew on a line you can make perfectly prepped patches.

Recently, on one of the PBS sewing programs, I saw the hostess of the program use what she called an “even-feed platform” for quilters. This platform allowed her to feed the quilt sandwich under the feet without any puckering or wrinkling to the quilt back fabric. Does anyone have information on this platform? Is it specific to a brand of sewing machine; where can it be purchased; how much does it cost, etc? Any and all information will be appreciated.

Hi Denise, Was this a large machine, just for machine quilting, or was it a typical sewing machine with a “walking foot” also called an “even feed foot?” If it was the latter, you can buy them for most machines. There are feed dogs in the foot that grip the top layer (like the machine’s feed dogs grip the bottom) so that all layers can move through the machine at the same time. They’re also great for applying binding.
