2009 New Year's Day Mystery Quilt

Monday December 29, 2008
It's time for a preview of the 2009 New Year's Day Mystery Quilt. Not too much of a look, but fabric requirements and suggestions -- enough to help you begin to sort through your stash. The 2009 quilt is quite a bit smaller than last year's mystery, but not so small that you'll have to deal with itsy pieces of fabric. Watch for a few cutting updates on Tuesday, and maybe a few sewing instructions on Wednesday. Full instructions will get underway at about 9 a.m. eastern time on Thursday.

P.S. I sure enjoy your e-mails. It is very insperational. I won a prize at the country fair with one of your baby quilt patterns. I don’t know how to send pictures or I would. But, thank you very much.

Hi, I’ve been adding instructions all morning. They are all in the original document, linked at the top of this page. It’s a step by step document, with new steps revealed on each page.

I’m sorry for the misunderstanding, they are always in the document that I promote in the newsletters leading up to mystery events.

Janet. Thanks so much for this great wall hanging. I finally got it finished early Friday morning. Didnt’ actually get started until about 3:30 pm NYDay. Was waiting on my friend to join me. We had a great time. As soon as I figure out how to send the photo I will. What a great way to start the New Year.

Thanks for a great day of sewing. If I make this again, I will make one adjustment. Instead of cutting/sewing the side strips to the four flying geese, I will cut 20 1/2 inch strips and sew them to 16 flying geese for each border. I had a dickens of a time getting those corners to match. And one word of advice/reminder when printing the flying geese foundation template, be sure to check the box on the printer screen that says “none” for adjusting the size to fit printer margins.

I thought about including instructions for long sashing pieces against those units, instead of individual strips. But decided that, after the first day, most people will treat it as a regular pattern, not a mystery, and I suspect that many will use a scrappy assortment of strips instead of one color.

I hope everyone who made the quilt will send me a photo — I have a few.

I finished the wall hanging about 6:30 pm central time NY day. It was a lot of fun. I haven’t got it quilted yet, but will try to get that done this weekend. I will send a pic of the wall hanging to you. Thanks for doing this. I did the 2008 mystery quilt also, and added a few extra borders but have not got it quilted yet.
