Why Some Quilt Blocks Work Together... and Others Don't

It's common to refer to patchwork quilt blocks by the grid arrangement of their patches, like four-patch, nine-patch, five-patch and more. If you're a new quilter, you might not realize that the terms describe a block's basic backbone, and that the grids make it possible to predict exactly how quilt blocks will fit together. Once you understand the basic concept you'll be on your way to designing original quilts.
