sampler quiltMany members of the our quilting community are working with me on the Anniversary Sampler Quilt. I designed the quilt to coincide with the end of my first year as Quilting Guide here at About.com, and as a way to move into year two by adding a block-a-month to the quilt skeleton you see in the illustration. It's about time to reveal the second block, so I thought it might be a good idea to introduce our new community members to the quilt, because there's plenty of time to join in the fun.

sampler quiltI've had some feedback from some of you about calling the first block simply Block One -- and I agree it's definitely not a pretty or creative description. The design is similar to the traditional Fox & Geese block, but with some of the units flipped-flopped. Can you think of a good name for it?

Janet, I am looking forward to working on your Anniversary Sampler Quilt, but have not yet started the first block. The instructions for Block 1 indicate that the background fabric will be used thrughout the quilt. I want to make sure that I have set aside enough of the “non-scrap” fabrics before beginning the blocks. Can you tell me how much of the background fabric will be needed for the entire quilt?

Paula – Well I managed not to put that in there, didn’t I! I’d recommend going on the high side, say 2-1/2 to 3 yards. Choose a background print you like because that’s more than you need, but you’ll use it again and it’s best to be safe.

Thanks everyone – for the name suggestions – all really excellent choices.

Since I’m doing my quilt in Christmas prints, it could be called “Christmas Goose” (or geese).

I think of changing weather when I see this # 1 block. Geese flying different directions, not knowing what to expect of the weather. Beautiful blue skys can be confusing, cold or summer? It’s a beautiful block. Thanks for letting me voice my opion. Ra from Stout, Oh

“Wild Goose Chase”…they look like they are chasing each other, but not in a normal fashion like good little geese…
