No Local Fabric Shops? Will You Buy Online?
Wednesday March 28, 2007
Thanks for all the responses to my post about the Hancock Fabrics, Inc., bankruptcy and store closings. If your posts show a trend, it's a trend that indicates that it's difficult to find affordable fabric in many towns and cities. Will you buy your fabric online, and if so, where? How about giving us a few recommendations for online fabric stores that stock a good inventory of fabrics -- but with yardages that are priced below what's normally found in quilt shops.

I spent most of Sunday shopping online for 2 particular fabrics that I needed that I couldn’t find locally. Here are some of the online shops I visited. I’ve ordered from some of them before.

No I won’t buy on line. I want to see and feel what I am buying. You can’t tell what a piece of fabric is like from a picture.
I do buy fabric on line but only brands I’m familiar with. I’ve been pleased with about 90% of my purchases, but I can always use the other 10% for scrap quilts. Because you can’t really match the fabric online to what you have on hand, especially if you’re looking for a border for a quilt you’ve already pieced, there are times you have to buy locally. I really would prefer to see & feel the fabric, but that’s just not always possible.
NO WAY WILL I BUY ONLINE.
I have several fabric stores that I trust when buying online. I usually don’t buy a brand for the first time online, because I like to know how a manufacturer’s fabric feels before I buy it. But overall my experiences have been very good and fabric has been as represented in scans.
I recently bought my first fabric on line & was really happy with it. I received a 30% discount & was less than if I would’ve driven cross town to get it. The Fabric Depot- Portland, OR
I am buying on line…but really love going to the fabric store…just to see and touch…always buy more than I went in for!
I’m fourth generation sewer, three generations of quilting! What will I do without fabric stores!
I agree with Vi,you can’t feel the product before you buy.And alot of the time you run into product out or it’s not the color illistrated online. But with our fabric shop closing and the hobby shop shortly later,a person in my town can’t get the items that are needed unless we go 58 miles away and have to battle the traffic and malls.
Online fabrics
bighornquilts.com
is the one that comes to mind and there are others that my mind has BLANKED on right now.
It’s nothing like touching the fabric (and let’s admit that we are ALL fabric junkies) but they are really nice as are the other places I’ve purchased from. Also…if you are trying to match something, it would be difficult. Trying to pick out 4 or 5 fabrics for an entire quilt w/ different patterns, colors, etc. would be VERY DIFFICULT…crazy-making.
Herrschner’s is another one…the quality exceeded my expectations.
Keepsake Quilting – LOVE their selections.
I’ve not had a “bad” experience w/ online, but I’ve not done a LOT of online shopping.
I BUY A LOT OF QUILTING ITEMS ONLINE. THE ONLY FABRICS I BUY ARE 2″ OR 5″ SQUARES.
I have purchased fabric on-line. However, I prefer to feel that fabric, thread count is important as is 100% cotton.
I buy a lot from http://www.thousandsofbolts.com . These are quilt shop quality fabrics, but not ‘new’ this season. Good customer service, quick delivery.
I’ve shopped online. I love browsing through all the fabric in my pj’s. I have one Super Joanns and one quilt shop near by. I also have another quilt also my sewing machine dealer who has the biggest inventory of novelty fabrics in the state including all the animals I will ever need. But I can buy cheaper online. Joann’s does’t have the selection they use to. It’s getting so with time restraints my family orders more and more online. Sure I would rather have a fully stocked shop nearby with all the stuff they have online but it’s not going to happen. It’s very hard to open a fabric shop. I did a business plan and depending on business it would take probably at least 2 years to break even. there is about a 60% mark up on fabric. But there has to be to cover the expenses. Quilt shops would be out of business if they sold it any cheaper. And with the internet the overhead is so much less. Especially if you have all the finanical and computer knowledge and can do all that yourself. Will be interesting to see where the industry goes.
i buy a lot of fabric from equilter.com. the quality is superb – equal to the local quilt shops – the prices are reasonable – a portion of your purchase goes to charity – and the bundles are wrapped in pretty paper when you get them. i highly recommend them.
I only have joanns and walmart which I know will be going out soon. joanns is very small store and 35 minute away. I will not buy on line. I to want to feel and see the color of the fabric. there are no quilt shops near us either. I live in artemas pa. thanks for the infro
I have bought online before and will continue to BUT only from a trusted site such as Keepsake and only if my local (within 75 miles) stores don’t have what I want.
I buy a lot of fabric online because there are few fabric stores near me. I live in Brooklyn, N.Y. I can’t afford quilt shop prices. I buy from Hancock, equilter(weekly sales),fabric.com and piecworkfabrics.com I have been very satisfied with them all.
I’ve left two comments here (I was even the first to comment) and neither of them have been posted. Why not? I gave the answer to the questions you asked. I entered several sites for fabric where I have shopped before. I’ve been to every site that I listed, as I was looking for particular fabrics on Sunday. If you aren’t going to post the comments, why do you ask for them?
For some reason, comments sometimes go into a filter, even my own comments do. I’ll look to see if that’s where they went. Otherwise, I don’t know why they wouldn’t have posted. Most things go live immediately. EDITED TO ADD: The web addresses made the comments go to the filter to wait for approval. Yours was of course not spam, but that is how we control the posts that are from people who visit blogs just to drop a bunch of Web sites in. Thanks for the list!
I like Hancock’s of Paducah and equilter for on-line purchases, but we should all try to buy locally when possible to keep from losing more of our stores dom’t you think?
When Wal-Mart stopped selling fabric I started purchasing from Hancock online. I have had wonderful results, but I know how a fabric will feel when I see its content as I have been sewing for more than 35 years. The nearest Hancock is 2.5 hours away and I don’t get there very often. I have also had some luck with smaller companies that teapost2quilting listed. It appears to be the only regular option I will have if I want to continue quilting.
I love using fabric.com. The quality is quilt store and the shipping is very quick (great for instant gratification). I also love using their design wall.
yes!! I will buy online, or through fabric magazines. We have no Hancock store. Only Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby. As we all know Wal-Mart has quit selling fabric and sewing notions, so it dosen’t leave the local quilters with much of a choice.
While I prefer to buy fabric in person, I will order online from http://www.bighornquilts.com. They have a good selection, good prices and fast service.
I never buy fabric online, but I am very fortunate to have Hancock’s, Hobby Lobby and Walmart real close by. I know Walmart is closing the fabric department and Hancock’s may be leaving us, but Mary Jo’s in Gastonia is about 45 minutes away. Mary Jo says that their big problem is that all the mills around here have gone overseas and that it is hard for them to get fabric. If y’all live in North Carolina’s piedmont area, it is surely worth the trip to Mary Jo’s.
I buy locally and online, but try to go to Mary Jo’s for a good portion of my fabric. It’s about a 2-1/2 hour drive from me, but worth the time and gas.
I agree with Marni, fabric.com is a good site.
I love to buy online and have never been disappointed. I go to quilt shops, too, whenever I can as I think those people in business should be supported. Buying online from http://www.fatquarterquilters.com is just a joy. They are just the friendliest!
I buy on-line from companies with reasonable shipping rates. What would it cost to drive vs. mail to my door. Mail to my door usually wins, because of the pleasure of opening the package. Yippee! it’s here! Thanks for the sites posted here–valuable information.
It’s never been a difficult choice for me, I buy both in person and online–Lots!! There are only three quilt stores within 50 miles, so if I need something specific not at JoAnn’s, I’ll check out the other quilt shops, which are usually overpriced. Online I use Hancock’s of Paducah, Equilter, Keepsake, Connecting Threads, Jinny Beyer, Nancy’s Notions, The Clever Quilter, and Thread Art, among others. I’ve only had a couple fabrics that I could only use in making trivets, so I’ve been lucky, and the fabrics and prices online have been great for me.
Even though I live in an area that has many quilt shops, I frequently shop online or through catalogs. It is so easy to search the online sites for a specific fabric or theme. My personal favorites are eQuilter and Craft Connections but there are so many to choose from that I probably have a dozen of them bookmarked. The shipping rates compare favorably with what it would cost me to drive around from shop to shop. I’ve never been disappointed with quality (much better than JoAnn’s or Walmart, who frequently carry some pretty junky stuff), and the service is almost always just wonderful.
Not only is this a fabulous online shop with prices ALWAYS 15% below “normal” quilt shop prices, but this shop extends its wonderful prices to those who visit the “physical” shop in Raleigh, NC. I buy fabric online at least once a week, despite the fact that I work at Wish Upon a Quilt! Elena
Live in northern fla near gainsville.
used to buy fabric at walmart- but since walmart dropped fabrics and layaway departments- no longer shop there. We do have a hobby lobby in town but after buying the wrong quilt book frm them – and hobby lobby refused to let me return in one day. don’t go there. now buy fabric online at fabric.com(dont pay shipping and handling) or just click on quilt links a browse … or even ebay ! should check out qnn.com
I haven’t bought fabric online-like most, I like to touch and see it in person. With Walmart closing its fabric department-I will soon have to. Thanks for the sites you all have named and thanks to Janet for this topic.
Comments about rudeness and messy and dirty stores are rampant in the comments here and in comments in the related post, where we first talked about the new closings. It seems unreal that a company either won’t — or can’t — figure out how to fix that very important part of their image. I wonder if they’ll ever get it?
Too true about messy stores. I’ve been in some that were positively scary–I didn’t know what or who might jump out at me from behind a knocked-over pile of bolts. Poor lighting, clerks who seem to spend all their time inventorying instead of actually waiting on customers. I blame it on on company management that doesn’t seem to understand what their customer base is, doesn’t hire enough help. Must be men who are at the top, because they sure don’t understand what women want!
I never use to shop on line until I found this great site! The fabric is 1st quality!
One site, they have hundreds of quality fabric quilt shop sites. They also have the maps to these quilt shops if you travel!
Quiltvisionusa.com
Enjoy!

I have never bought fabric on line. It would be too hard to judge color and see how various fabrics will look together. I am lucky to have a couple of quilt shops plus Joanne’s and Hobby Lobby nearby. (I live in a large suburb near Chicago—Naperville.) I do most of my shopping at Joanne’s—I can get good quality at a good price. While I know some purists who say Joanne’s fabrics won’t hold up, I have a number of quilts in daily use for years, and ’so far so good.’
i have bought from quilt in a day, fabic.com,KEEPSAKES.COM HAVE HAD NO TROUBLE WITH ANY OF THE PLACES I HAVE BOUGHT ON LINE, BEST WAY TO SHOP,
I live in Vanuatu (South Pacific chain of islands) and have NO shops here to buy any quilting fabrics or supplies. I travel back to the States once a year for my major stock-up (and I do mean MAJOR!) so I rely on on-line shopping for those in-between purchases-yes, I have bought fabrics on-line-but ususally just tone-on-tones and fat quarter bundles (which I have been very happy with). I have purchased from Joanns.com and Hancock’s, but neither will ship overseas so I have to have them sent to a family member in the states and they either have to re-send it to me or hold it until I get there. Does anyone know of an on-line shop that will send over seas???
I like to feel fabrics. It gets my creative juices flowing, so to buy online would put a real crimp in my style.
Thanks for all of this. I have really been stressing about not having a fabric store locally. I love to go in and browse, and love the smell of a real fabric store. You loose that in walmart even.
Shopping online can be very helpful especially if you are looking for specialty items like cat fabrics, dog fabrics, Christmas fabric, Aunt Grace etc. You will find a much better selection online than anywhere else. Sew-Sisters in Canada offer low prices and inexpensive shipping. You can visit them at http://www.sew-sisters.com
Retail fabrics has been a very interesting business. Becuase of the internet one does not need to worry as much for losing a local store. Becuase of walmart and hancock closing out some of their fabric departments sewers will see that there are many other fabric stores on the internet to choose from. So do not worry and enjoy shopping for fabrics on the web. Check out http://www.jandofabrics.com
Keep on sewing.
I do shop online since there are no quilt shops in my area. My favorite online shop is Victoria Vista Quilts.
http://www.victoriavistaquilts.com.
They have a huge selection of textures, blenders and accent fabric, their prices seem reasonable, and I have never had a problem buying from them.
I have a lot of quilt stores close by, but I have also shopped on-line, especially when I have seen some new line of fabrics and simply MUST have all of it – or a particular color, etc. The quality of the main manufacturers is consistent enough that I know I can trust them. I have just opened my own online shop through the website quiltshops.com. It’s called quiltparts.com.
I do not plan on purchasing fabric on line on a regular basis. I need to feeland touch the product to see if it’s of a good quality. I can’t get inspired by a 3×3 picture. There is something about the real thing.
I live in a place with nothing in way of fabrics. If I don’t order I don’t get. I’m to old to go out of town looking. http://www.fabricdepot.com is great. So is http://www.hancock-paducah.com (not affected by the bankrupcy). Others I use are http://www.annsfabricsand crafts.con; http://www.thethriftyneedle.com. I’ve had great luck with all four of these. Happy shopping and happy quilting. Jeanette
My partner and i refuse to buy fabric on line. We like to visit shops, speak to the shop keepers, get advice, and like to find different fabrics and touch the fabric. With all the internet sales, many shops are forced to close, this meaning no one to get advice or to help match fabrics etc…. Support the retail stores to keep this hobby survive.
No………I want to get the notions and materials as I need them. I do buy some things online, but not often, and not material. I like to look at it, feel it, and imagine.
http://www.fabric.com has a great selection of fabrics and notions. And the prices are really affordable
I think its who you are buying from online thats important.Go to fabrics-textiles.com: they offer close-up pictures of fabrics like patchworks, madras and other quilting fabrics & also refunds for fabrics in case you dont like them-thats important.its risk-free then.
Hey I’m not happy about Hancock fabrics shutting down stores I just recently found them and now I don’t know what I’ll be doing for my Quilting fabrics. With walmarts shutting down there fabic department there are no reasonably priced places to get fabric. I’m on a limited income and can’t afford $8.00 or more that they charge on the internet. Plus on top of that you have s&h to pay.
I think it is awful that we live in a modern society where fabric is so hard to get ahold of. We have lost so many values and to take away the traditional sewing needs and force us to go online to get the fabric we need is ridiculous. I do not shop online, and I tend to purchase fabric when I can see it up close and personal and touch the texture, see the colors, and know what I am buying is what I will eventually use.To buy online is not practical when you need just the right color or piece of fabric to finish a quilt block or you are not completely sure what your next quilt will be made of, so you go the fabric dept. to decide. I live 20 miles from any town and the towns that have Hobby Lobby are 50 miles away. Even Hobby Lobby is doing away with fabric. Quilt shops have great fabric but the prices are not always affordable. Alot of people are going to stop quilting and doing crafts they love to do because of the lack of availability of fabric.
Earlier, Gwen mentioned about no quilting shops in Brooklyn, NY. There is one in Flatbush on Coney Island Ave, plus they also have a website: http://www.sew-materialistic.com
I shop on-line as well as my closest quilt shop which is a 45 minutes drive each way. My local quilt shop closed a year ago. Before then I shopped from it a lot. However, I have never had a bad experience on-line. The fabrics are always quality. I use Hancock’s of Paducah, AH Mercantile, Equilter, and a couple of others. Whoever has the best deals at the time I’m shopping. I love to feel the fabrics, too, but I do what’s best for the money. I have to. That’s the bottom line for me.
In my opinion, http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com has the best selection of fine fabric on the internet.
Shopping online is not a scary experience, in fact in many ways you can add tangibility to the shopping experience. At Denver Fabrics, you can order fabric swatches for One Cent Each, no Shipping and Handling. Of all the places I have been to online they have a huge selection of fabrics and their prices aren’t outrageous by any means
I love shopping online, its one of my favorite things to do from home
I have been a loyal customer of the Fat Quarter Shop for a while. They have the best kits and carry fabrics that fit my taste. They also ship fast. ,
I like to go on line to see what is available, both to shops and to maunfacturers sites. Then if there is something special I find, I will copy it and try the local shops first. Hate to see so many of them closing and try to do my part to keep them ope, at least that is my excuse to my husband.
Connecting Threads has come out with their own line of fabric that’s only $5.96/yard. It looks like quality stuff too.
http://connectingthreads.com
I think it’s simply wonderful that we have sooo many more choices now to get our good cotton fabric! I buy, sell and trade my quilting fabrics almost entirely online. I rarely see the need to waste my sewing time and gasoline just to get in the car to go an buy a yard or two of fabric.
I DO find the twice a year area shop hops, and the Quilt Shows much more efficient as a means of seeing what’s going on. And the two sizeable catalogs (Connecting Threads and Keepsake Quilting) are also a great way to keep up with what the manufacturers are making. I urge quilters to stop contributing to global warming, wasting their time shopping away from home…get on the internet and get EXACTLY what you want. In my book, time = money, and we tend to discount the time spent shopping… but it is indeed entirely wasted time! Life is short and, as Ami Simms says “Babies are getting COLD!”…
PIECE and Happy Seams to all!

Hi – I buy fabric online all the time. Sometimes it is from stores that I have physically been to. I also like shopping from http://www.quiltworld.com — it shows the whole fabric line to make it easier to pick matching or coodinating fabric and it is sale priced $2.00 off the store price!! Fabric.com is a good place for general sewing – lots of clothing (not just cotton) fabric. Bearpawquilting.com is also a great place for novelty prints (kids, sports, etc)– fabulous sale prices.
Hancock Fabrics used to be a decent store. They were everywhere. Same for the old Cloth World stores. I sew garments for myself and my family, do a small amount of home decorating, knit, crochet, needlework, and have no interest in quilting or quilting supplies whatsoever. It may or may not be critical for quilters to see and touch fabric, and online shopping might be a good idea for them. I need to see the true color, texture, and drape of the fabric, as well as the feel. If I knew how to open and run a fabric store, I would do it tomorrow. WalMart ? My WalMart has a very poor selection of fabrics and few notions. I have had a good experience with Clotilde Nancy’s Notions.
Hi
Everyone i know buys the best patchwork madras fabric online at Atlantis Fabrics. They have the widest collection of madras patch fabrics both online and offline. No store has that kind of a collection.I think its because they are a US company which has their own warehouse in India. And thats where all the best cotton fabric, especially, madras fabric comes from.
Its the preppy look thats in and we buy all our fabric online at Fabrics-textiles.com
And we wonder why we are losing so many of our local quilt shops….online fabric purchases are helping kill personal service usually found in storefronts and the tactile experience of buying fabric. What a shame.
Thanks for this great topic! I have bought online when I have been stationed in places where fabric of any kind is hard to come by, and when it is something in particular I need from a trusted fabric line, and have never had a problem.I visit local shops when I can, and when they also have a website that keeps me doing business with them when I have to leave the area it is really a wonderful thing!
I grew up with a quilting mother nad have recently began myself… I have only bough fabric online once and i was very pleased… It was from the Virginiaquilter.com. they not only sell online but they are an indipendant shop in Fredericksburg Va.
This shop puts up new fabrics every Friday. Fabric is quilt quality and their selection and prices are great!
Sorry that fabric link is http://www.fabricblowout.com
I have an online quilt shop, ChristaQuilts.com, and I definitely recommend it!
I enjoy both local brick & mortar and online quilt shops — I think they each meet the varying needs of different quilters.
Ladies, i am just about to open a fabric store here in garner north carolina, Do you guys think i can survive? I know that alot of us make a living on fabric so, i have made my up my mind. What do u guys think should i do it? Or will i go out of buisness.More pepole are buying online.
I live in Australia, am housebound and poor. YES I shop on line….OFTEN……..
I would LOVE to be able to touch and feel the actual fabric first and see large pieces together but my on line experience has been VERY POSITIVE. I have had no ‘bad’ experiences with credit details, shipping (as along as I am willing to wait 2-3 weeks) or choice. I find the quality, choice and sample depiction to be accurate, first class and spot on with the colour. It has been VERY EASY on the pocket which has enabled me to purchase MORE FABRIC. I usually stick to KNOWN BRANDS which are the same all round the world. Using the net enables me to have a greater choice of designs and colours and I can hunt down the best price in the comfort of my own home.
I have used:
Hancocks of Paducah, Cottoncapers,Fatquarter Quilters,Quilters Biz, craftconnection, heirloom patch
My dear, I live in California, and if not for the new quilt shop that opened right as Hancock’s was closing, I would only have Jo-Ann’s. That’s fine to a point, but I’m so glad for that quilt shop! I have bought 6″ squares through the catalogue, but I prefer to go to the quilt shop. It’s way more fun! lol I don’t know how things are doing out your way, but if it’s anything like out here, you’ll be fine!
I don’t live in the States and quilt shops haven’t made it here. Not having great fabric shops nearby is probably what keeps me from overspending, but then when I really need something that’s not available locally to finish a project (and that’s pretty nearly everything…) it’s good that there are so many options available on line. I have had some color disappointments but usually my on line purchases are much better than what I can find locally!
I have tons of them! Have to check my bookmarks. http://www.quiltersroundup.com and http://www.stitchnframe.com have sales alot
http://www.quiltingcotton.com mostly 6.49 was 5.99,
http://www.fastthreads.com has good sales its called Blondies. I just keep checking for the sale 5.99 is usually the lowest I find.Prices are up to 9.49 now! so 6.99 will be “normal” for sale soon..Hope this helps
http://www.zandsfabrics, http://www.tennesseequilts.com has over 600 on sale for 4.99-5.99
If you sign up for the fabshophops.www.fabshophop.com you will find lots of stores and they do sales during the “hop” finding a bunny for prizes. You could just look at stores tho. I have won 10.00 gift certificate each time forom one of the stores
Hi,
Mil mentioned that we, Sew Materialistic, were located on Coney Island Ave in Brooklyn. We actually just moved to 1131 McDonald Ave. Still in Brooklyn, several blocks away.
Thanx!

To MARA – Hi , i LIVE IN cLAYTON, NC and was so glad to read your note, please provide more info, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze.
For a quilt shop in Canada with low prices and great service you could try Sew Sisters Quilt Shop. There website is http://www.store.sew-sisters.com
I live in Kentucky and in my small little town we only have one quilt shop and no place else carries fabric within 30+ miles. Our only quilt shop (Granny’s Attic)is fabulous and is branching into an online business. They are currently in the process of putting more items on their site but they have awesome prices, great quilt shop quality fabric, and wonderful customer service. They are located in Campbellsville, Kentucky. The brick and mortar store has been open for over a year now and the online part has been up for a few months now. I highly recommend this shop both in person and online. If any of you quilters like to travel come and visit.
Los Angeles has huge fabric district for days. Here is one and they have rayon, poly, nylon, cotton etc.

Hi,
I have an on-line quilt shop. I sell great fabrics, kits and patterns, and offer excellent customer service. I try to help answer questions about color, thread count, etc., so you’ll be happy with your purchase.

I buy a lot online, mostly from well know manufacturers. I especially like http://www.westplainsquiltco.com. They offer 10% military discount on all orders!
The only store that sells fabric in this small country town is Walmart. I’ve bought lots of fabric from them. Not only for quilting, but for making my clothes. Walmart is reasonably priced and good quality so far.
I’ve always loved to sew and I’m just now returning to my favorite hobby. It’s very exciting! I do wish there were more stores to choose from that I could buy fabric from. I am a little timid about buying online. I love to touch and feel every fabric I see (even if I don’t buy it). I could spend HOURS just looking at fabric!
I buy the majority of my fabric on line and so far I have not encountered any problems. The quality has more often than not exceeded my expectations. Thank you, Karenkt3234
Yes, I shop online because there isn’t any place locally to buy good quilt fabric. I particularly like Victoria Vista Quilts at http://www.victoriavistaquilts.com for all sorts of textures and accents. I also like Seawatch Fabrics at http://www.seawatchfabric.com for batiks.
I do most of my shopping online. We have several large box stores, hobby lobby, jo-ann’s, hancock, but they are all 35min away in Temple the most confusing driving conditions (I hope the road work is done soon). My husband is supposed to be able to stay where we are instead of going to S.K., but if we end up going, I will be doing all my shopping online. Is there a PX anywhere that sells fabric? lol
