Quick and Easy Rag Quilt in Holiday Colors
Monday December 4, 2006
Here's the easy rag quilt pattern for you try. My example is sewn in Christmas colors, but I used fabrics that are generic enough to work in any season. The project is lap quilt sized, something many of you asked for last in a Christmas projects poll awhile back. This cuddly quilt can be sewn in just a day or two and would make an excellent holiday gift. I plan to keep one in the car to offer a bit of warmth in an emergency.

I saw your holiday quilt and thought it was very pretty yet simple. It inspired me to maybe make one myself.
I have made thewe blankets for years. I use 2 yards for a regular blanket, and 2 1/2 yards for a tall person. The thickness of the batting in a regular blanket decides its heavyness and warmth.
I find I can use one layer of fleece and one of flannel and a thin layer of batting will make a good blanket.
Now if you use 2 layers of fleece you DO NOT use any batting, because you wont be able to move. I know.
With fleece being 60in.,using 2 yards makes the best blanket.
You can either sew it with no turning,( no unravelling) or you can cut the edges into strips appx 1in wide and appx 3 1/2in long, and tye them to make a fringe.
These make absolutely wonderful gifts quick and easy.
Thank you for your articles.

Love this insight to have a blanket to keep in the car (motorhome) for when the driver is warm and the passenger (me) is cold. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. bjb
I’ve made a rag quilt, w/ mostly Flannel on the back, cotton batting in the middle, and a combination of homespun, and flannel on the top. I have various shapes like 6 x 6 and 3 x 3 squares, and 3 x 6, 3 x 9 rectangles. I did not quilt the individual sandwiches… Is this okay? Or will it fall apart. Also i have alot of dark reds, oranges and one beige. Should I worry about washing it? Help anybody?
