Sew the final quilt block for the Backwards Medallion Sampler quilt. The block is simple, but is sewn with 25 pieces of fabric -- enough to repeat at least some of the fabrics used to create the 16 outer quilt blocks. The center block finishes at 12-inches square.

You might recognize one of the quilt blocks in this wallhanging... it's the traditional Ohio Star. I've altered the design's 'normal' look a bit by changing the positions of contrasting patches and placing the blocks on point. An alternate block finishes up the central portion of the quilt.

Try this colorful H quilt the next time you want to go scrappy. I've included a couple of options in the pattern. One lets you strip piece sixteen groups of four identical H units, and then mix them up in the layout. The other gives you cutting instructions for one block, to help you attack the fabrics in your scrap bin (you might want to go with a combination of the two methods to make the best use of available fabrics). The quilt finishes at about 42" x 42" -- make it larger by sewing more of these simple blocks.

Oriental Courtyards is a quilt that finishes at about 65" x 85". It's made with two blocks, Snowball and a block I called Courtyard. I suspect the block has been seen in the past, since (looking back at history) most "new" things are not truly new at all. The design works well for a mix of small to larger Asian themed fabrics, but it's easy to alter its appearance by simply choosing fabrics with a different theme.
